Hi Dem,
I meant "love it or hate it" in a more figurative way. But some people find they don't enjoy living in a different culture, being too far away from family or even the language differences that can be difficult to overcome in some countries. Getting a year or two of exposure will help you know if you feel comfortable as a "foreigner". That's important.
I hope that helps.

I'm back again; you give sound advice, and I am desperate for more.

You mentioned that I may have to decide whether I love TEFL or hate it...are there folks out there who sincerely hate TEFL? If so, what are the primary reasons? I want to believe it's b/c they didn't do their research. (e.g. realizing that "children's theater" or clowning around all day and trying to make children smile is sickening or uncomfortable) But this would really sadden me b/c I've found that the MORE research I do, the more the desire languishes. I've already developed the idea that I am not strong enough (both physically and mentally) to travel abroad TEFL when, originally, I was drooling over the idea! Or is it just natural to develop these brooding fears before deciding - "hey, there is a need, and I am going to fill it"...?

Thank you for your time Ted,

Hi Dem,
Ordinarily I'd say loud and clear: FINISH COLLEGE FIRST- but if you really don't know what you want to study and TEFL is a good option, it is not a bad idea to test drive it for a year or two and see if you love it or hate it. DO make a promise to yourself to that that degree though. Life is already quite limiting without one and it will only get worse in the future. Take a look at www.TEFLinternships.com as a possible way to get your foot in the door.
I hope that helps.

Ted,

Grave apologies if I'm repeating previous questions - I only had time to look through (maybe) half of these posts!

I've read about Ageism in TEFL, as well as gender inequality. Being that I am 19, a woman, degree-less, and deficient of a TEFL certificate.. what should my first step be: Should I rough the next 3 years of University and get a degree, then get the TEFL cert? (proving I'm more credible, and even worth looking at)
Or should I take the plunge now (much more desirable), get my TEFL certification, and attempt to journey through Cambodia/China? Are these the best locations to teach without a degree in your opinon? Are there any latin american countries?

The reason why I am at this crossroad is b/c I have NO idea what degree to pursue and feel that Maybe TEFL could even guide me (has it guided you?) I've read through some of your Special Skills posts....and I believe that having a degree harnesses those special skills , making them tranferable TEFL. My skills are not very concrete, and perhaps meaningless without a degree. But, I do have (some) skills. Such as : a yoga t eacher, experience as an Inspector (Aerospace industry), 13 years Girl Scouting, and 4+ spanish. (this is why I prefer a latin american location)! It's unclear to me how any of these skills could be transferable
, what do you think?

Thank you so much for reading, I would be elated to receive any advice/information from you.

Hi Jennifer,
In my experience Business English jobs are not usually advertised though you will see them from time to time. Usually you pick up those types of classes at a regular school and as you get good at it you can find yourself teaching only those classes. Most typical is a company will ask a language school for a Biz English teacher and that's when you get to make the jump.
I hope that helps.
